The Way We See Things

By Ginger Cockerham

One of the most important things I heard in a recent workshop was the presenter’s statement that, “the enemy of competency is surprise.” He said that in situations where we are surprised, we often react with assumptions and judgment instead of responding appropriately. When we assume that the way we see things, is the way they really are, our reactions can lead us to make mistakes.

I thought of a column I read in the Dallas Morning News highlighting a great example of assuming and judging. The columnist wrote that in the city, people are often in a hurry and sometimes go to ridiculous lengths to save time - like jumping out of their car at a red light to get something out of their trunk or back seat.

During rush hour recently a young woman pulled into a passing lane just as the light turned red. She popped out of her car and whirled around to get something out of the back seat. She was still reaching into the car despite the fact the turn signal was green. Angry motorists behind her blared their horns with some swerving around her car honking and hollering at her. When she pulled a small child out of the car who was choking and struggling to breath, drivers responded very differently. Suddenly, people were calling 911 and waiting to see if they could help. The way we see things is not always the way they really are!
  1. When you experience a surprising situation, do you often react?
  2. Do you assume that the way you see things is the way they really are?
  3. Do your judgments sometimes prevent you from seeing the truth?
  4. How willing are you to look at situations from different perspectives?
  5. Are you open to explore at least three other possibilities?

My husband, Steve, and I recently committed to look at surprising and/or frustrating situations from at least three different possibilities before we respond. It is an amazing exercise that stretches our perceptions.

Free Seminar

The "Ride" of Your Heart in a Horses' World FREE 2 hour seminar

Join me for a lively seminar Wednesday April 11th, 2007.
Time: 7:00-9:00 PM at Creative Living Institute in Rapid City, SD.
In this fast paced event you will:
1. Join your heart with the wisdom of a horse
2. Know how to connect your heart to the energy of a spirited horse
3. Begin to create your trailmap that will guide you toward your dreams.

Horses mirror our ability to focus, make decisions, and take action in a way that is hard to ignore. Something happens that is mysterious, many times awe-inspiring, never humdrum—when we step into the presence of a horse. The horse’s playful curiosity, razor sharp insight and uncanny awareness reveal the truth about ourselves, even before we know it.

When we encounter a horse, we touch the deeper part of ourselves that until now has been hidden. It is the inner wisdom and spirit of the horse that mirrors your desire to express your own wisdom, power, and magnificence and gives you a trail of self-awareness and positive self assessment to travel. Arouse Your Heart

Think about the last decision you made. It could have been a big decision that took a lot of thought. Or maybe it was an unconscious or simple decision such as what you were going to have for lunch. Got that decision in mind?

Now ask yourself, “Did you consider what your heart wanted most?” The heart is the center of human life, your life. It’s the creative source of power within you. Your heart is the bridge between you and others, between your longings and reality. It’s the meeting place where “deep soul intimacy” is shaped in each of.

Unfortunately, life circumstances can just capture the attention of our minds and we learn to bypass our heart all together. My encouragement to you is to bring your heart into the simple and complex choices and decisions you make.

One way to do this is ask yourself, “Does this choice or decision bring me closer to what is valuable and important to me?” Your heart, the place of creativity, love, passion and connection to others, will guide you in life. It’s your best friend!

John Eldredge in his book, Waking the Dead wrote this,

“To find God, you must look with all your heart. To remain present to God, you must remain present to your heart. To hear his voice, you must listen with your heart. To love him, you must love with your heart. You cannot be the person God meant you to be, and you cannot live the life he meant you to live, unless you live from the heart."

Do You Get What You Want?

Do you know the #1 reason people don’t get what they want? It’s because they don’t KNOW what they want. People lack clarity in their lives. To be successful, live in abundance and feel fulfilled, you need to have crystal clear clarity about how you want your life to be. There is a grand plan for you life. God has created it for you. Do you know what that plan is?

You can know and live that plan to it’s fullest. I have a valuable tip for you today that will lead you to crystal clarity.

Fully Alive Tips #1 Look for the Unseen
Our lives include the visible and invisible. Our lives are much more that what is physically in front of us. “Look” for the unseen. Notice what God is up to around you. How can you be involved? What are you passionate about?

Taking action is imperative to creating change and success in your life. So, write down everyday one powerful thing you noticed about the unseen world and how that is significant to you. By next week you will have 7 new awareness’s that will lead you to that clarity that will guide you to success and significance.

Part II
Did you recognize the unseen this week? I hope you kept track of your new awareness’s. I did. The theme that I saw throughout my week was……... are you ready?

“I am what I think!” Ta Da!! Now that is not new to me, but I had a whole new awareness regarding it. I was much more conscious of my thoughts and “took them captive” Meaning, I noticed them, felt them and decided if I wanted to keep those beliefs or not. I noticed I had more choice about how I was going to think, therefore, feel and act.

My second tip for you in creating the life you long for is:

Fully Alive Tip #2 Understand You
When you know yourself intimately, your ways of thinking and being, you have the ability to change that thinking to serve you better. How you perceive the world and the things that go on around you, impact your daily living. Take time to observe yourself from the outside looking in. Note those places where the “unseen” is at work empowering you to reach those things that are of importance to you. What are you thinking and how are you showing up in the world?

Your thoughts will impact your life. Know you better; it will lead you to what is significant and important in your life!
